As of 2004, Toulon had an estimated population of 168,639.
Toulon is believed to have been established in about the 2nd century BCE, when the Romans founded a colony on the present day site of the city known as Telo Martius.
During the Roman period, Telo Martius was one of the principal dye manufacturing centers for the purple dye used for imperial robes. These were made from a local sea snail, murex, and acorns from oak trees.
The province of Provence became part of France in 1486. Soon after in 1494, King Charles VIII of France began construction of a military port on the site.
Today, Toulon is home to a major French naval base, is home to the French Mediterranean Fleet, and is the home port of the French aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle.

Toulon has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are generally hot, and Winters mild. Rain is rare, but when it does occur, can be torrential.

A distinctive feature of Toulon's climate is the wind. Strong winds occur on average on about one third of days in the year. On occasion, winds from North Africa, known as Sirocco, can bear reddish sand carried from the Sahara.
