  1. Nancy is a city in the Lorraine region of northeastern France.

  2. As of the 1999 census, Nancy had a population of 103,602, with 410,509 people living in the metropolitan area.

  3. Place Stanislas, a large square in Nancy, that was built by Stanislaw I (King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Duke of Lorraine) between 1752 and 1755, has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  4. Nancy has been part of France since 1766, when the Duchy of Lorraine became part of France following the death of Stanislaw I.

  5. In 1871, after the Franco-Prussian War, Prussia annexed Alsace-Lorraine (consisting of most of the formerly French province of Alsace, and about a quarter of the formerly French province of Lorraine). Nancy was among the parts of Lorraine that remained French. The flow of French refugees from other parts of Alsace-Lorraine resulted in a rapid growth of the city.

  6. During World War II, like the rest of France, Nancy was occupied by the Germans. The city was liberated by the US Third Army in September 1944.

  7. In 1988 Pope John Paul II visited Nancy.

  8. In 2005, French President Jacques Chirac, German President Gerhard Schröder, and Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski together jointly inaugurated Place Stanislas after it had been renovated.
